Chestnuts – Health and Nutrition

Photo: Chestnut treeChestnuts contain low quantities of sodium, saturated fat and oil. They are also gluten and cholesterol free. Fresh chestnuts contain about 52% water by weight.

Chestnuts are a good source of Viramin C (the only “nut” containing Vitamin c), Copper, Potassium, Iron and a very good source of Manganese. The Vitamin C is reduced after heating.

Chestnuts can be processed in a number of ways and are used widely in recipes. See Chestnut Products for details and Chestnut Recipes for cooking ideas.
